The abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has taken a disturbing new turn, with the abductors reportedly demanding ₦1 billion ransom alongside the implementation of Sharia law as conditions for their release.
The incident occurred when armed men attacked a school in the area, abducting several pupils and teachers. The attack has triggered widespread panic across surrounding communities and renewed concerns over worsening insecurity in the state.
Kidnappers Expand Demands Beyond Money
According to reports from the Oyo State House of Assembly, the abductors have gone beyond financial demands and introduced political and ideological conditions.
They are reportedly insisting on:
- ₦1 billion ransom, to be paid into a bank account in the Republic of Benin
- Two Hilux vehicles
- Food supplies
- Release of individuals they claim are connected to their group and currently in detention
- Implementation of Sharia law in Oyo State
Security observers say the inclusion of ideological demands marks a troubling shift, complicating possible negotiation efforts.
Families Plead for Rescue
Families of the abducted pupils and teachers have continued to appeal for urgent government intervention. They say they are living in fear and uncertainty as the victims remain in captivity.
Community leaders in Oriire LGA have also called for swift action, urging authorities to prioritise the safe return of the abductees.
Government and Security Response
While Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier suggested openness to considering certain options to secure the victims’ release, the State House of Assembly has reportedly rejected negotiation with the abductors.
Lawmakers are instead calling for intensified rescue operations and stronger security action.
Security agencies are expected to step up efforts as pressure mounts on authorities to resolve the situation and rescue the victims safely.
Growing Security Concerns
The incident has sparked wider debate among security analysts, who warn that kidnapping operations are becoming more complex, with some groups allegedly introducing political or ideological demands alongside ransom requests.
Residents continue to call for improved security presence in rural communities to prevent further attacks.
