Nigeria’s Federal Government Allocates N250 Billion to Boost Rail Infrastructure in Northern States

Nigerian Federal Government has obtained approximately N250 billion in financing to advance light rail initiatives in two key northern states. This move underscores the administration’s focus on fostering growth beyond the national capital.

According to statements from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the funds will support enhanced transportation systems in Kano and Kaduna. Specifically, Kano is set to receive N150 billion, while Kaduna will benefit from N100 billion.

The announcement came during a press briefing in Abuja, where Idris highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to promoting progress at state and local levels.

Idris emphasized that the current leadership is prioritizing fair allocation of resources across all regions, countering any notions of favoritism. “Our approach ensures no part of the country is overlooked in terms of capital investments,” he noted.

This rail funding is part of broader efforts to assist state-led projects, aiming to improve connectivity and economic activity.

Additionally, the minister pointed out reforms benefiting lower tiers of government. With the removal of oil subsidies, states are now accessing substantially higher revenues from the federation account, enabling them to undertake more initiatives with reduced borrowing.

Local governments are also gaining greater financial independence, positioning them as key drivers of grassroots development.

This infrastructure commitment aligns with ongoing national strategies to modernize transport networks, potentially easing logistics challenges and supporting sectors like real estate and aviation in the affected areas. Stakeholders in the transport industry have welcomed the news, anticipating positive impacts on urban planning and daily commutes for residents.
