Improper Sewage Management: LASG Shuts Balmoral Convention Center

Lagos currently faces a mounting sewage management crisis driven by rapid population growth and inadequate infrastructure.

The Lagos State government through the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off Balmoral Convention Centre, Victoria Island over indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain via the use of a pumping machine and unattended Wastewater spillage from a blocked sewage chamber causing public nuisance and foul smell.

This was revealed by Lagos State commissioner for environment and water resources Tokunbo Wahab in a social media post on Wednesday.

The agency also sealed-off Foodies Restaurant at No. 32B, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase I, Eti-Osa, Lagos, over indiscriminate discharge of untreated wastewater containing large deposits of fat and oil into the public drains, clogging the drains and causing foul smell, environmental nuisance and pollution, despite several warnings.

Lagos State’s Sewage Management Problem

Lagos currently faces a mounting sewage management crisis driven by rapid population growth and inadequate infrastructure.

In Lagos, most households depend on septic tanks and pit latrines due to the limited reach of centralized sewage systems. Facilities operated by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office cover only a small portion of the city, leaving large volumes of wastewater untreated.

The gap in formal systems has led to widespread informal disposal practices. Private operators often dump untreated sewage into drains and water bodies such as the Lagos Lagoon, contributing to environmental pollution, flooding, and water contamination. These conditions significantly increase the risk of diseases like cholera, particularly in densely populated and low-income communities.

Although regulators such as the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency have established policies, enforcement remains weak. Combined with high costs of proper waste disposal and poor urban planning, the system struggles to keep pace with demand. Addressing the crisis will require stronger regulation, infrastructure investment, and scalable sanitation solutions to protect public health and the environment.
