IMF invites recent PhD graduates for 2024 programme

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recently announced its invitation to recent PhD graduates to participate in the 2024 Young Economist Programme. The program offers an exceptional opportunity for newly minted economists to directly engage with leaders in the field and contribute to shaping economic policies worldwide. With increasing economic challenges and global uncertainty, the IMF recognizes the importance of nurturing young talent and supporting their research initiatives.

The program is targeted at young PhD graduates in economics who want to have influence on the global stage and who can bring the latest in economic thought and multidisciplinary approaches to help address key global monetary cooperation, securing financial stability, boosting international trade, promoting employment and sustainable economic growth and reducing poverty. During the three-year program, candidates will rotate through two departmental assignments, joining economic teams working in regional and country-specific surveillance as well as fiscal, monetary, balance of payments, debts, or related issues.

To participate, prospective candidates must Have recently completed or are expected to complete a PhD within a year (or less) of joining in fields including macroeconomics, finance, public finance, monetary economics, international economics, trade, poverty issues, political economy, econometrics or related areas, possess an excellent academic record, have validated analytical, quantitative, and IT skills, be below age 34 at entry to the program on September 11, 2023. and also Have strong written and oral English skills.

IMF also stated that candidates must be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of macroeconomics (even if specialized in other areas during graduate school), able to utilize conceptual frameworks to communicate complex ideas, and be comfortable in navigating around the different sectors of an economy and the linkages between these sectors.
