Sequel to the recent floods that devastated parts of Borno State, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has launched a comprehensive integrity assessment of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri.
This was made known by the Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
The initiative, which aims to prevent future occurrences, is expected to ensure safety of lives and property in vulnerable areas.
Prof. Utsev, in his remarks, noted that the 2024 celebration of World Rivers Day, commemorated under the theme “Waterways of Life,” was observed on a low-key due to the flood incident that claimed lives and led to the destruction of property on September 10, 2024.
“The ministry has embarked on a comprehensive assessment of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri to ascertain its integrity and to take stringent measures that will help guard against future occurrences.
“I have directed the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to maintain vigilance on the water levels of the rivers in Maiduguri and other riverine areas across the nation,” Utsev said.
He also highlighted the role of rivers in the water cycle, enhancing economic survival, and providing a habitat for aquatic life.
Utsev assured residents of the federal government’s commitment to collaborating with state governments, especially along the River Benue, to enhance flood preparedness.
The minister also called for continued vigilance among state governments in flood-prone areas, urging them to implement sensitization campaigns, clear drainage channels, and relocate residents where necessary to mitigate further risks.
In a related development, the government of Zamfara State has announced a N100 million donation to support the victims of the recent flood disaster in Borno.
The donation is part of an ongoing effort by states to provide relief to those affected.
The Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, emphasized the need for other states and international communities to support the people of Borno during this challenging phase.
