ExxonMobil is recruiting for a Process Technician position based offshore in Nigeria, providing an opportunity for experienced oil and gas technicians to join its Operations team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day surveillance and safe operation of assigned production equipment. The role involves monitoring process conditions, supporting equipment preparation and maintenance, identifying operational abnormalities and ensuring compliance with established safety procedures.

The position is open to Nigerian citizens who meet the required technical qualifications, relevant industry experience and NYSC requirements.

About the ExxonMobil Process Technician Role

The Process Technician will provide operational support for assigned offshore production units. The position requires a strong understanding of process operations, equipment performance, safe work practices and potential process hazards.

The technician will develop detailed knowledge of unit operations, safe operating limits and control schemes while monitoring equipment and supporting the safe and efficient running of the facility.

The role may involve both field and console operations, depending on operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of primary unit operations, safe operating limits and control systems.
  • Understand process and environmental hazards associated with assigned equipment.
  • Follow safe work standards, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), Management of Change and procedure compliance.
  • Conduct assigned surveillance and sampling rounds.
  • Monitor equipment performance and identify unusual operating conditions.
  • Support troubleshooting and process optimization activities.
  • Prepare equipment for maintenance and return equipment safely to service.
  • Participate in field and/or console operations.
  • Follow emergency response procedures in different operational scenarios.
  • Maintain awareness of process safety requirements and operating envelopes.
  • Support coordinated activities designed to minimize process upsets and operational risks.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have a minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Process or Instrumentation Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.

Acceptable qualifications may include:

  • HND in Process Engineering
  • HND in Instrumentation
  • City & Guilds Level 4 in Process or Instrumentation
  • Equivalent qualifications obtained through an oil and gas industry-specific apprenticeship programme

ExxonMobil also states that candidates with a BSc in engineering or related sciences without an HND may be considered if they have established and verifiable experience as a process technician in the oil and gas industry for at least three years.

The position is strictly a technician role.

Professional Experience

Candidates must have at least three years of relevant oil and gas operator technician experience.

Previous offshore or FPSO experience is preferred.

Applicants should demonstrate the ability to adapt to changing operational conditions, strong analytical skills, good communication abilities and the confidence to identify and address workplace hazards.

Technical Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should have experience or knowledge in several areas of oil and gas operations, including:

Production Equipment

Experience operating and maintaining equipment such as:

  • Pumps
  • Compressors
  • Separators
  • Production equipment
  • Associated process systems

Instrumentation and Controls

Candidates should have a basic understanding of instrumentation and mechanical systems, including the ability to:

  • Perform minor repairs and routine equipment adjustments.
  • Read transmitters, sensors, gauges and control valves.
  • Understand Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems.
  • Understand Fire and Gas (F&G) systems and their importance to process safety.
  • Monitor and control process parameters through Distributed Control Systems (DCS).

Process Safety

Applicants should understand workplace hazards and appropriate control measures, including:

  • Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures
  • Critical device bypass
  • Process safety barriers
  • Safe operating limits
  • Emergency response requirements

Piping and Instrumentation

A good understanding and ability to interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) is required.

Hydrocarbon Processing and Tank Operations

Experience with hydrocarbon processing will be valuable for the position.

Candidates should have knowledge of areas such as:

  • Crude oil processing
  • Crude oil stabilization
  • FPSO cargo tank operations
  • Tank inert gas systems
  • Oil and gas separation
  • Dehydration
  • Gas compression
  • Water treatment
  • Export systems
  • Offloading procedures

Knowledge of these systems will help the successful candidate safely monitor and operate offshore production facilities.

Nigerian Citizenship and NYSC Requirement

Applicants must be Nigerian citizens.

Candidates must also have completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and possess either:

  • An NYSC discharge certificate; or
  • An NYSC exemption letter.
