The Nigerian naira recorded a mild depreciation at the official market, while remaining unchanged across key parallel market segments, reflecting continued tight liquidity conditions and cautious market sentiment.

Data sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) shows that the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) rate weakened to ₦1,349.67 per dollar on April 20, 2026, compared to ₦1,342.50 recorded on April 17. This represents a 0.53% decline, equivalent to a ₦7.17 loss against the dollar.

In contrast, the parallel market exhibited stability. The naira held at ₦1,390 per dollar, unchanged from the previous trading day, suggesting a temporary equilibrium between supply and demand in the informal FX segment.

Other major currency pairs in the parallel market also showed no movement. The naira traded at ₦1,840 per British pound and ₦1,590 per euro, both flat compared to prior sessions. Similarly, the Canadian dollar rate remained steady at ₦1,000.

The divergence between the official and parallel market trends underscores persistent structural pressures in Nigeria’s foreign exchange system. While administrative and policy interventions by the CBN continue to influence the official window, the parallel market remains driven by real demand dynamics, including import obligations and offshore payments.

On the reserves front, Nigeria’s external reserves declined marginally to $48.62 billion as of April 17, down from $48.65 billion the previous day. The 0.11% drop signals ongoing FX interventions and obligations, which continue to weigh on reserve buffers.

The broader implication is a market still searching for direction. Stability in the parallel market may indicate short-term balance, but the slight weakening at the official window suggests underlying pressure remains unresolved.
