Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed early Wednesday morning outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel, the site of UnitedHealth Group’s annual Investor Day.
According to the New York Police Department, Thompson, 50, was attacked near the hotel at approximately 6:55 a.m., an hour after arriving. Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Legacy as CEO of UnitedHealthcare
Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004, rising to CEO of its insurance division, UnitedHealthcare, in April 2021. During his tenure, Thompson prioritized innovation and equity in healthcare delivery. In 2023, he led the adoption of a value-based care model, transitioning from fee-for-service to systems designed to incentivize preventive care and improved patient outcomes.
Thompson also championed the integration of digital tools to enhance efficiency and accessibility, including telemedicine and data-driven decision-making platforms. A manhunt is underway for the assailant, with the NYPD offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Authorities have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The company has yet to issue a statement on how it will address the leadership transition during this crisis.
