FBI Blames North Korean Hackers for $6.3bn Theft
The FBI identified TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group, as responsible for the attack. The group is regarded by cybersecurity researchers as a sophisticated cybercrime operation whose activities generate funds for North Korea, including programmes linked to the country’s weapons development.
The $6.3 billion theft represents one of the largest cryptocurrency-related security breaches on record and adds to a series of cyberattacks attributed to North Korean-linked groups.
North Korea has repeatedly been accused by international authorities and cybersecurity investigators of using sophisticated cyber operations to target cryptocurrency exchanges, financial institutions and digital asset platforms. The Binance theft is the largest of a string of crypto thefts blamed on North Korea.
