AIICO Insurance Appoints Sadiq Mohammed, Tunde Mabawonku, Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani as Non-Executive Directors

The three new board appointees are expected to help take AIICO insurance to the next level

AIICO Insurance Plc has announced the appointment of Mr. Sadiq Mohammed, Mr. Tunde Mabawonku and Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani as non executive directors.

Mr. Sadiq Mohammed – Independent Non-Executive Director

Mr. Sadiq Mohammed is an accomplished business leader and board-level executive with over 33 years of experience spanning financial markets, asset management, pensions, alternative investments, infrastructure, real estate, and fintech/startup investments. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hexium Investments, an investment and advisory firm focused on the financial services and real estate sectors.

He spent 28 years at ARM Group, where he held several senior leadership positions, including Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director/CEO of ARM Pension Managers, Chief Operating Officer, and Managing Director of ARM’s Proprietary Business. During his tenure, he oversaw major proprietary investments and landmark infrastructure and real estate projects, including Lekki Concession Company (LCC), Fara Park Estate, Beechwood Estate, and Lakowe Lakes Golf & Country Estate. He also served on the Boards of ARM Holding Company and several of its subsidiaries.

Prior to joining ARM, he worked for three years at Arthur Andersen, now KPMG Professional Services Nigeria.

A highly experienced board director, Mr. Mohammed has served across the financial services, infrastructure, real estate, hospitality, technology, and industrial sectors. He previously chaired FMDQ Clear Limited, where he led its transition into a full Central Counterparty Clearing (CCP) platform, and also served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of FMDQ Group. He currently serves on the boards of Meta Digital Services (MDS) Nigeria Limited and DCSL Corporate Services Limited, while also sitting on the ARM-Harith Infrastructure Fund Investment Committee and several advisory boards.

Sadiq Mohammed is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Charterholder with GARP, and holds a dual International Wealth Management Executive MBA from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Geneva. He also earned a B.Tech (Hons) degree from Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa University.

Across his distinguished career, Mr. Mohammed has built a reputation for strategic leadership, governance excellence, and deep investment expertise, contributing significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s financial markets and broader economic development.

Mr. Tunde Mabawonku – Non-Executive Director

Mr. Tunde Mabawonku is the Executive Director overseeing Finance, Retail and Digital Business at Wema Bank Plc, with more than 25 years of professional experience across digital and retail banking, finance, strategy, organizational transformation, tax and cost management, investor relations, corporate sustainability, human capital management, risk management, and customer experience.

Before his appointment as Executive Director, he served as Chief Finance and Strategy Officer, leading the Finance and Corporate Services Division.

He began his banking career at Chartered Bank before moving to Prudent Bank, where he headed the Performance Management and Cost Control Unit and later became Deputy Head of the Financial Control and Strategy Department. Following the merger that created Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank), he led several strategic functions, including Human Capital Management, Performance Management, and Financial Advisory Services.

Mr. Mabawonku is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School General Management Program (GMP).

He holds a Master’s in Finance (MiF) from London Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan.

Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani, HCIB – Non-Executive Director

Mrs. Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani is a seasoned board-level executive with nearly two decades of experience across financial services, energy, banking, capital markets, development finance, and risk advisory. She possesses extensive expertise in capital mobilization, investment oversight, risk governance, and energy finance, with significant experience operating across pan-African and multi-jurisdictional regulatory environments.

She is the Founding Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EnergyInc Advisors, a financial advisory and strategy consulting firm focused on capital mobilization, infrastructure financing, project de-risking, and strategic advisory within the energy, oil and gas, finance, and climate sectors.

Over the course of her career, she has led and advised on transactions and capital raises exceeding $10 billion across the energy, infrastructure, and financial services sectors, coordinating multi-stakeholder teams across both public and private markets.

Her previous leadership roles include General Manager/Head of Investor Relations and Corporate Development at Zenith Bank Plc, Chief Commercial Officer at Mixta Africa, Senior Africa Advisor at IFU, and senior energy-focused positions at FBNQuest Merchant Bank, Ecobank Group, Eurasia Group, and Control Risks Group.

Mrs. Akinkugbe-Filani has extensive board and committee experience spanning Audit & Risk, Finance, Investment, and People & Organization Committees. She is widely recognized for strengthening governance structures, providing strategic oversight, and supporting organizational growth.

She currently serves as an Independent Non-Executive Director at UpEnergy, an Independent Non-Executive Director and Investment Committee Member at ALL ON, and a Non-Executive Director at Save the Children International.

Mrs. Akinkugbe-Filani holds a Global Executive MBA in Finance from the TRIUM programme — jointly delivered by NYU Stern School of Business, the London School of Economics, and HEC Paris — as well as an MSc in International Relations and a BSc (Hons) in Government from the London School of Economics. She is also an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (HCIB).

Her early career included political, regulatory, and security risk advisory roles at Control Risks Group and Exclusive Analysis, alongside positions with the European Commission and the International Crisis Group, providing her with deep expertise in enterprise risk assessment across frontier and emerging markets.

Mrs. Akinkugbe-Filani brings to the boardroom a unique combination of strategic insight, financial expertise, sectoral depth, and international operating experience, making her a strong advocate for commercially driven, governance-focused, and impact-oriented leadership.
