Luxembourg Publishes 20 Shortage Occupations, Opens Faster Hiring for Nigerian Workers

Luxembourg
Luxembourg has published a list of 20 shortage occupations for 2026, creating additional employment opportunities for skilled foreign professionals, including Nigerians seeking jobs in Europe.

The list, published in the country’s official gazette, covers professions in banking, finance, healthcare, engineering, construction, social services and information technology.

The development allows employers recruiting for the listed occupations to benefit from a simplified hiring process, reducing some of the administrative requirements involved in bringing foreign workers into Luxembourg.

For Nigerian professionals with relevant qualifications and work experience, the opportunities span several fields, particularly financial services, software development, cybersecurity, nursing and engineering.

What Luxembourg’s Shortage List Means for Nigerian Workers

The main advantage of the shortage occupation designation is that it makes recruitment from abroad easier for employers. When a vacancy falls within one of the recognised shortage occupations, employers can bypass the usual requirement to demonstrate that no suitable candidate is available in Luxembourg before recruiting a foreign worker.

This removes an important administrative hurdle for companies seeking skilled employees from outside the country, including Nigeria.

According to Luxembourg’s National Employment Agency (ADEM), employers recruiting for the listed occupations can obtain a certificate confirming the availability of foreign labour within five working days of acknowledgement of their application.

However, inclusion on the shortage list does not automatically give a Nigerian applicant a job, work permit or residence permit. Candidates must still secure an employment offer and satisfy the relevant immigration, qualification and professional requirements.

Which Nigerian Professionals Can Benefit?

Nigerians with relevant professional qualifications and experience in the 20 listed occupations can explore employment opportunities with Luxembourg-based employers.

Some of the fields offering potential opportunities include:

  • Banking and finance: Nigerian accountants, financial analysts, credit risk specialists, compliance professionals and investment professionals.
  • Information technology: Software developers, data engineers, cybersecurity specialists, database administrators and network engineers.
  • Healthcare: Qualified nurses, nursing assistants and other eligible healthcare professionals.
  • Engineering: Industrial engineers, mechanical maintenance specialists, quality management professionals and construction-related specialists.
  • Education and social services: Early childhood educators, social workers and professionals specialising in socio-educational support.

How Nigerians Can Apply for Jobs in Luxembourg

Interested professionals should begin by identifying vacancies that correspond to their qualifications and experience.

They can search for opportunities through Luxembourg’s official employment services and recruitment platforms, including the National Employment Agency (ADEM).

The process is:

  1. A Nigerian applicant finds a suitable vacancy with a Luxembourg employer.

  2. The employer declares the vacancy to ADEM.

  3. The employer requests the foreign workforce certificate.

  4. If the position matches an occupation on the shortage list, the certificate is issued within five working days following acknowledgement.
