The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has raided a suspected scam compound in Ghana, arresting or detaining more than 130 people in an operation targeting international fraud networks.

FBI Director Kash Patel disclosed the development on Thursday in a post on his official X account, saying the operation was conducted as part of the bureau’s global campaign against scam centres.

Patel described the Ghana operation as part of “Operation Blackout”, an ongoing FBI effort to dismantle organised fraud compounds around the world.

“OPERATION BLACKOUT: This is the FBI’s global scam-centre fraud demolition. Another takedown this week out of Ghana,” Patel said.

According to the FBI director, the operation has so far uncovered nearly $10 million in identified losses and 89 victims.

More than 130 people were arrested or detained during the operation, while over 300 electronic devices were seized by investigators.

Patel said some of those detained were victims of trafficking and would be repatriated to their home countries.

“Investigation is ongoing. These scam compounds target American citizens and destroy lives – and this @FBI is crushing them in every corner of the world. More to come,” he said.

The Ghana raid forms part of the broader Operation Blackout campaign, which Patel said has resulted in roughly $17 billion in seizures, hundreds of arrests and the rescue of thousands of trafficked workers.
