Abdulwasiu Sowami is a Nigerian oil and gas entrepreneur who founded Prudent Energy & Services Limited and currently serves as Group Executive Chairman of Ardova Plc.
Sowami came into greater prominence in 2019 when he acquired Femi Otedola’s controlling stake in Forte Oil Plc, marking a major change in the ownership of one of Nigeria’s established petroleum marketing businesses. The transaction, involving approximately 74% of the company, paved the way for its rebranding as Ardova Plc in 2020.
From Petroleum Trading to Energy Group Leadership
Sowami’s business career predates his acquisition of Forte Oil. He served as general manager of Cosmos Oil from February 1999 to November 2003, gaining experience in the operational management of a petroleum business. His responsibilities included supervising departmental activities, developing operational processes and implementing programmes aimed at improving efficiency.
In March 2004, he became chief executive officer of Prudent Energy & Services Limited, a company he founded and developed into a significant part of his business portfolio. During his tenure, the company built a multidisciplinary workforce of more than 200 direct employees, according to his professional profile. His stated management priorities included operational discipline, workforce development and budget control.
Prudent Energy became the foundation of his wider business interests, with Sowami subsequently associated with companies operating in petroleum exploration, energy services and related investments. His professional portfolio has included leadership positions at Ignite Investments & Commodities Limited, Prudent E&P Limited, FES Energy Limited in the United Arab Emirates and ArdoGreen Energy.
These interests reflect a business strategy centred on energy, spanning activities beyond conventional petroleum marketing. However, the precise scale, ownership structure and financial contributions of individual businesses within the wider portfolio are not fully established by the available biographical information.
Forte Oil Acquisition and the Birth of Ardova
The acquisition of Forte Oil from Femi Otedola was Sowami’s most prominent entry into Nigeria’s publicly listed corporate sector. Forte Oil had developed a nationwide presence in petroleum marketing, with operations serving motorists, commercial customers and industrial users.
The change in ownership was followed by the company’s rebranding to Ardova Plc in 2020. The transition marked a new chapter for the business and placed Sowami at the centre of its corporate leadership.
He served as chairman from June 2019 and subsequently assumed the role of Group Executive Chairman in August 2023, according to his professional profile. The distinction reflects his continued involvement in the company’s strategic direction as his responsibilities extended across the broader group.
His leadership of Ardova has given him a visible role in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry, a segment shaped by changes in fuel supply, distribution economics, infrastructure requirements and the country’s evolving petroleum-market structure.
For Sowami, the acquisition represented more than a change in corporate ownership. It provided a route from privately developed energy businesses into the leadership of a major listed company, bringing with it the demands of corporate governance, capital allocation and oversight of a larger operating organisation.
Expanding Energy Portfolio
Beyond Ardova, Sowami’s business interests have been associated with Prudent Energy and its related companies. His executive positions across several entities suggest an emphasis on maintaining a presence in different parts of the energy value chain.
Prudent E&P Limited points to interests in exploration and production, while FES Energy Limited extends the geographical reach of his business associations to the United Arab Emirates. ArdoGreen Energy adds a further dimension to the portfolio, although detailed public information on its activities and financial contribution would be needed to assess its significance.
The breadth of these interests places Sowami within a generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs seeking opportunities across petroleum trading, distribution, upstream operations and other energy-related businesses.
Education and Professional Development
Sowami studied Sociology at the University of Maiduguri, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree between 1990 and 1995. He later pursued a master’s degree in Corporate Governance at Leeds Beckett University in the United Kingdom, completing the programme between 2015 and 2017.
His subsequent professional education includes a Doctor of Business Administration degree from the University of Business and International Studies (UBIS), for which his professional profile lists a period of study from December 2021 to November 2024. In May 2024, he also attended Harvard Business School’s CEO and Key Executives Leadership Program.
