Senator Shehu Buba Umar has found himself at the centre of fresh banditry allegations as he seeks to move from the Senate to the Bauchi State Government House in 2027.
The Bauchi South senator is facing renewed allegations that he has links to banditry and has provided financial or logistical assistance to people associated with armed groups operating in northern Nigeria.
Buba has repeatedly denied the allegations, describing them as false, politically motivated and part of an attempt to destroy his reputation and derail his political ambitions.
Security Paradox
Shehu Buba Umar is chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence and has previously presented himself as a politician with experience in conflict resolution.
Before becoming senator, Buba worked in education and became involved in conflict-resolution initiatives.
His academic background includes a master’s degree in Conflict, Peace and Resolution Management.
He subsequently became involved in political and government appointments and worked around issues involving farmer-herder conflicts.
Buba is preparing for the 2027 Bauchi governorship election on the platform of the PRP.
The current allegations are not the first time Buba has been publicly linked to claims involving banditry.
The first major episode emerged in 2024, when Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed was reported to have raised concerns over individuals allegedly connected with banditry who had been sponsored for the Hajj through arrangements associated with Buba.
Buba rejected the accusation at the time arguing that he had assisted people to undertake the pilgrimage but was not aware that any of those people had criminal affiliations. He also questioned the suggestion that sponsoring someone for Hajj amounted to knowledge or responsibility for that person’s alleged criminal activities.
Latest Allegations
A man identified as Hassan began making allegations against Buba in videos and interviews that subsequently circulated widely online.
The claims attributed to Hassan went beyond the earlier Hajj controversy and included allegations that Buba had relationships with people associated with bandit groups and had provided support that could facilitate their activities.
Some of the allegations circulating around the controversy concern suspected associates of notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide.
Other claims involve alleged financial payments, motorcycles distributed through constituency programmes and contacts with individuals described as intermediaries between politicians and criminal groups.
Relationship Between Buba and Hassan
The relationship between Buba and Hassan is one of the most important elements of the controversy.
Buba does not deny knowing Hassan but stated Hassan was introduced to him as an orphan who needed assistance with his education.
Buba says he responded by helping Hassan obtain an education, including arrangements involving a private college and Islamic education in Kaduna.
He has described the assistance as part of the kind of support he routinely provides to people who approach him for help.
He says Hassan later sought financial assistance to establish a car dealership, but that he declined to provide the requested money.
Buba subsequently accused Hassan of exploiting his access to his residence to obtain photographs and videos of people who visited him. The senator alleges that the material was later used to construct a narrative linking him to bandits.
Some footage circulating online has been presented as evidence that people associated with banditry visited or interacted with Buba.
Buba has challenged the interpretation of the footage and says some of the videos have been edited, manipulated or taken out of context.
Banditry Financing Allegations
Among the more serious allegations circulating against Buba are claims concerning money.
According to reports, allegations have been made that Buba gave large sums of money to a Kaduna-based cleric identified as Assadus Sunna, allegedly for onward transmission to bandits.
Buba has however denied the allegation with his legal representatives characterizing the claims as defamatory and part of a coordinated attempt to damage his reputation.
The allegations circulating against Buba also include claims that motorcycles distributed through constituency empowerment programmes were ultimately supplied to bandits.
The name Dogo Gide has featured prominently in some of the allegations.Gide is one of Nigeria’s most notorious bandit leaders and has been associated with armed groups operating across parts of north-western Nigeria.
Buba Fights Back
Buba has responded to the allegations through legal and law-enforcement channels.
He has said that he petitioned the police and has pursued legal action concerning defamatory claims made against him.
He has also challenged those making the allegations to submit evidence to the appropriate authorities.
