Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin is emerging as Nigeria’s biggest talent in Tennis following a succession of major grand slam appearances. Known on the court as “The Shark”, Ogunsakin has turned a succession of junior victories into a spring board to the Grand Slam.
Born on February 28, 2009, Ogunsakin is a product of Aurum Tennis Academy, where he has developed from a promising junior into one of the country’s leading young players. He joined the academy in October 2022 after already establishing himself among Africa’s best players in his age group.
His breakthrough came early. In 2023, he won two ITF Under-14 tournaments and the African Junior Championship in Togo. Those victories propelled him to the top of the Confederation of African Tennis rankings for his age group.
By 2024, his progress had accelerated. He won five junior singles titles during the year and became Nigeria’s No. 1 junior player, underlining his rapid transition from promising prospect to the country’s leading player in his age category.
Major Career Breakthrough
In January 2026, the US Open announced him as one of the recipients of a $25,000 Grand Slam Player Development Programme grant. At the time, he was ranked 82nd on the ITF Junior Circuit and was described by the US Open as the second-highest-ranked Nigerian junior since the introduction of combined rankings in 2004.
The funding matters because elite junior tennis is an expensive pursuit. International tournaments require travel, accommodation, coaching, equipment and competition fees. For an emerging player from a country with a relatively limited tennis-development infrastructure, access to international competition can be as important as talent.
Ogunsakin’s 2026 campaign has subsequently taken him across some of the biggest tournaments in junior tennis having competed at Roland Garros before making history at Wimbledon. In July, he became the first Nigerian since 1990 to compete in the boys’ singles event at Wimbledon. His qualification ended a more than three-decade wait for Nigeria in the tournament’s junior singles competition.
His Wimbledon run went further than simply making the draw. Ogunsakin reached the quarter-finals in the boys’ singles before losing to Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin in a tightly contested match. He also reached the junior doubles quarter-finals with Raguin.
At the 2026 US Open Junior Championships, Ogunsakin fought through qualifying to reach the 64-player main draw. He defeated Poland’s Tymon Litwic 6-3, 6-0 before producing one of his most notable victories of the tournament, beating Canadian top seed Felix Roussel 6-3, 6-4.
On September 7, Ogunsakin secured his first Grand Slam junior main-draw victory at the US Open, recovering from losing the opening set to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Kuan-Shou Chen 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. The comeback sent him into the second round and gave him another landmark in a rapidly developing career. At 17, he has already played at Roland Garros, made history at Wimbledon and reached the US Open junior main draw. His first Grand Slam main-draw victory has now added another milestone.
The International Tennis Federation lists Ogunsakin as a Nigerian junior player, while Aurum Tennis Academy describes him as its leading player and credits his development with a rise to the top of Nigerian junior tennis.
What is Next For The Teenager
There is a massive gap between becoming an outstanding junior and becoming an established professional and Ogunsakin is still at the beginning of that transition.
His current challenge is therefore bigger than collecting junior titles. It is to convert the exposure, ranking points, international experience and financial support accumulated through the junior circuit into a sustainable professional career.
That means moving from junior Grand Slams to the ITF World Tennis Tour, improving his ranking, competing regularly against older players and eventually establishing himself on the ATP Tour. For Nigeria, Ogunsakin offers a rare opportunity to build a new tennis narrative around a player who has already demonstrated that he can compete internationally.
