Nigeria Tax ID

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced the full transition from the traditional Tax Identification Number (TIN) to a new unified Tax ID, which will serve as the sole official taxpayer identification system nationwide.

The transition is being implemented under the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, a landmark reform aimed at modernizing tax administration, improving transparency, reducing duplication, and strengthening tax compliance across the country.

Key Changes

Under the new framework:

  • Existing TINs will no longer serve as the primary taxpayer identifier.
  • A unified Tax ID will be used for all tax-related activities and transactions.
  • Individuals and businesses are expected to update their records and adopt the new Tax ID for tax filings, banking transactions, government contracts, and other official engagements.

The notice issued by the NRS provides examples of the transition:

  • Old TIN: 12345678-0001 (Cancelled)
  • New Tax ID: TXID1234ABCD001 (Approved)

Benefits of the New Tax ID System

According to the tax authorities, the new Tax ID framework is designed to deliver several benefits, including:

  • A single, unified taxpayer identity
  • Simplified tax compliance processes
  • Improved transparency and accountability
  • Enhanced revenue assurance
  • Better harmonization of taxpayer data across government agencies

The reform is also expected to facilitate stronger integration with existing national databases, including the National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals and Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration records for businesses.

How to Retrieve Your Tax ID

Taxpayers can access and retrieve their new Tax ID through the official Tax ID portal:

For most users, the process requires only a valid NIN (for individuals) or CAC registration number (for corporate entities).

Officials have emphasized that the migration process has been designed to be straightforward and seamless for compliant taxpayers.

The NRS stated that the Tax ID will become increasingly mandatory for a wide range of financial and commercial activities from 2026 onward, including banking operations involving taxable persons and other regulatory transactions.

Taxpayers are therefore encouraged to obtain and verify their Tax IDs as soon as possible to avoid potential disruptions to business and financial activities.

The transition to a unified Tax ID marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing tax reform agenda and is expected to improve taxpayer identification, compliance monitoring, and revenue administration nationwide.
