The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has announced a nationwide implementation of a mandatory Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in Nigeria.
The reform, which was disclosed via an official public notice on the agency’s X (formerly Twitter) handle, is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025.
It requires every taxable individual and entity in the country to obtain a Tax ID as a unified identifier for tax-related transactions.

A Unified Identity for Tax Administration
According to the NRS, the new Tax ID system is designed to streamline tax administration across federal and sub-national levels of government, improve data accuracy, and eliminate duplication in taxpayer records.
The agency explained that the Tax ID will function as a single, consolidated identity for all taxpayers, enabling smoother interaction with tax authorities nationwide.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the NRS stated.
It added that the system will consolidate taxpayer information, reduce duplication, and improve the overall management of tax data.
Simplifying Tax Compliance and Processes
The revenue authority noted that the reform is also aimed at simplifying key tax processes such as registration, filing, and payment.
“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures,” the agency said.
Officials said the digital framework is part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s tax ecosystem and improve efficiency through technology-driven solutions.
Strengthening Transparency and Reducing Revenue Leakages
The NRS further stated that the Tax ID system will enhance transparency and accountability in tax administration by improving visibility of taxpayer data and reducing revenue leakages.
It also emphasized that the system will harmonize taxpayer records across all tiers of government, ensuring consistency in tax data management nationwide.
“The system will improve transparency by enabling better visibility and tracking of taxpayer records while reducing leakages and improving accountability in tax collection,” the agency noted.
“The framework will also harmonise taxpayer information across all levels of government.”
Replacement of Existing TIN Validation System
As part of the transition, the new Tax ID system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API currently used by ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), as well as financial institutions and other regulated organizations.
The NRS directed all organizations requiring taxpayer verification or integration services for individuals, enterprises, and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB to access the new API and implementation guidelines.
Similarly, corporate entity validation services are to be handled through the Tax Automation Department of the NRS.
Broader Tax Modernisation Drive
The reform is part of a wider push by Nigeria’s tax authorities to digitize operations, improve compliance, and expand the national revenue base through modern digital infrastructure.
Officials say the initiative will enhance efficiency, strengthen governance, and support long-term fiscal sustainability.
