Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
In a statement released on Sunday, Kwankwaso confirmed that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing an end to his role as the party’s national leader. He expressed appreciation to the NNPP for the opportunity to serve, particularly highlighting his experience as its presidential flagbearer during the 2023 general elections.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso said.

“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the party’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.”
The former minister of defence acknowledged that the decision was difficult but necessary, citing prevailing political conditions in the country as a key factor behind his departure.
“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he added, noting that the current political climate left him with no alternative.
Move to ADC Imminent
Kwankwaso’s exit raises questions about his next political move and could reshape alliances ahead of future electoral cycles, particularly in northern Nigeria where he maintains a strong support base.
Some of his supporters have said he is poised to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday to team up with other members of the opposition coalition in the build up to the 2027 elections.
