IRGC Naval Chief Alireza Tangsiri Responsible For Strait of Hormuz Closure Reportedly Killed in Israeli Strike

If confirmed, his death would represent a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict

Alireza Tangsiri

Alireza Tangsiri, the naval commander of Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has reportedly been killed in a strike in Bandar Abbas, according to Israeli media citing an unnamed official.

The reports claim that the attack allegedly carried out by the United States and Israel targeted Tangsiri in the strategic port city, a key hub for Iran’s naval operations near the Strait of Hormuz. The official indicated that Tangsiri had been overseeing efforts related to the potential closure of the critical maritime chokepoint, through which a significant portion of global oil shipments passes.

Tangsiri, a native of Bushehr Province, rose through the ranks of the IRGC Navy after serving during the Iran–Iraq War and the subsequent “Tanker Wars” of the 1980s, which marked early direct tensions between Iran and the United States. Over the years, he held several senior operational roles, including command of the IRGC Navy’s 1st Naval District in Bandar Abbas, before serving as deputy commander from 2010 to 2018 and later assuming full command.

If confirmed, his death would represent a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with multiple senior Iranian figures reportedly killed since coordinated strikes began on February 28. However, there has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities or the Israeli military regarding the incident.

The development, first reported by The Times of Israel, adds to mounting uncertainty around the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy markets. Analysts note that Tangsiri played a central role in Iran’s naval strategy, particularly in asymmetric maritime operations and deterrence in the Gulf region.
