The Labour Party has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region of the country. The party’s acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, confirmed the decision during an interview with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

“We have one certain decision that we have taken, and that is that we will certainly not field any aspirant from northern Nigeria.

“We have zoned the position to Southern Nigeria. So if any northerner comes now to want to contest elections, we certainly will not accept that,” she said. This is similar to what happened in 2023 when Peter Obi emerged.

2023 Labour Party Primaries

The presidential candidate selection process of the Labour Party for the 2023 election was relatively straightforward, as after Peter Obi defected from the Peoples Democratic Party in May 2022, the party scheduled its presidential primary for late May in Asaba, Delta State.

On the day of the primary, the contest effectively became uncontested. Although multiple aspirants had initially indicated interest, three of the four cleared contenders, professor Pat Utomi, Olubusola Emmanuel-Tella, and Joseph Faduri all stepped down in support of Peter Obi prior to voting.

Obi emerged as the consensus candidate of the party, securing the nomination with near-unanimous delegate backing, with only a single invalid vote recorded
