Award-winning British grime artist Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to 12 years in jail for causing the death of a 20 year old in a London hit and run incident.
The rapper who has received multiple music accolades, including Best Male Act at the MOBO Awards and a MOBO Pioneer Award for his contribution to British black culture, was first arraigned in October 2025 for the crime.
Details of the Case
Ghetts, 41, admitted that on 18 October 2025, he drove his BMW M5 in Ilford, northeast London, at excessive speed and struck 20-year-old Yubin Tamang, a university student from Nepal who was crossing the road. Tamang died in hospital two days later.
He pleaded guilty on 8 December 2025 to causing death by dangerous driving and also admitted additional counts of dangerous driving on other London roads earlier on that same night.
At a plea hearing, Judge Mark Lucraft KC stated that the only appropriate sentence would be a custodial one, though the exact length of the term was not determined at that time and was scheduled to be passed at a hearing in early March 2026.
The sentencing has now been confirmed to be for twelve years for the prominent figure in the UK grime scene, active since the early 2000s with collaborations alongside artists such as Skepta and Stormzy.
