MTN, one of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications companies, has announced the temporary closure of all its stores and service centres across the country. This decision follows widespread outrage among subscribers whose lines were barred on Sunday.

Viral Video Sparks Concerns

On Monday, a viral video circulated on social media showing a mob dismantling a barricade fence outside an MTN office. The footage depicted a large crowd of irate subscribers vandalising the company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State.

This violent response was triggered by MTN’s decision to block subscribers’ lines due to discrepancies between their National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM registration details.

Police Response and Restoration of Order

In response to the chaos, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed via his X handle that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order at the scene. He emphasised that vandalism and violence are not the appropriate ways to address grievances.

MTN’s Nationwide Closure

Reacting to the situation on Tuesday, MTN announced the closure of its shops nationwide.
