Working Lives: The Make- Up Artist Who Saved Up NYSC Allowance to Start Up

My best days are when I make up a bride. The excitement is just something I always look forward to. You know that feeling of making up a bride to be just perfect before she walks down the aisle with her groom. It always makes me so proud of myself”.

 Anikky_Signatures- Meiran, Lagos.

Where are you from?

I am from Ogun State.

Which school did you attend and when did you graduate?

I attended Olabisi Onabajo University, Ago Iwoye. I graduated in 2014.

And your family?

I come from a family of 5 and I am the first child. My dad is a civil servant, he works for the Lagos State Government, while my mom is a petty trader.

Where do you live/ how much is the rent?

I live in Meiran with my husband in a 2-bedroom flat apartment, we pay N250,000 as annual rent.

How did you start working as a make-up artist?

I had the passion and zeal for the profession. That was what gave me the vibe to go ahead and start learning to be a make-up artist. I started learning from when I was in secondary school. I was getting make-up jobs by the time I got to the University.

Who did you learn from and for how long?

I trained under “Meenah Make Up Pro” in Iyana Ipaja, I trained for 2 years under her.

What were you doing before you started the make-up business?

After university, I just decided to save up my NYSC allowance and establish as a makeup artist. In this kind of country where it is so difficult for graduates to get a job, one has to be very smart while planning for one’s future.

How many hours do you work in a day?

You know I have a physical store, so I get to my shop around 10 a.m. daily. I have three people that work under me who get to the shop earlier.

What’s your best day like on the job?

Working for a bride. The excitement is just something I always look forward to. You know that feeling of making up a bride to be just perfect before she walks down the aisle with her groom. It always makes me so proud of myself.

How much do you charge for a make-up session?

It depends on the type of make-up session- a photo shoot for models, birthday shoot, causal party look etc. But the least I would ever charge is N4,000.

How much do you make in a week?

It varies depending on the bookings and appointments I get. I make an average of N10,000 a week.

How much do you spend in a day?

I spend N3,000 at most in a day on feeding, transport fare to my shop or to meet customers at their homes.

What other things do you spend money on?

Buying make up products mainly. This is what takes the bulk of my money. There’s a wide range of makeups out there, and customers of course want the latest. It won’t be cool for a customer to ask for a particular brand and then you say you don’t have. It will only make them not rate you. A if you have a Danessa Myricks products as a makeup artist, people would rate you. Her vision cream cover and moisturizers are good for a great skin finish.

For how long have you been in the business?

Just a year, I started around this time last year.

Do you have savings and how much do you save in a month?

Yes, I save N10,000 monthly.

Are you married?

Yes, I am happily married with 2 kids.

Do you have plans to venture into something else?

I have some other things I want to venture into in line with my profession. They are still other personal thoughts and plans that I don’t want to disclose just yet.
