U.S. President Donald Trump has officially revoked Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection on Thursday through a formal memorandum to the Secretary of Homeland Security.

The directive cancels an undisclosed order signed by former U.S. President Joe Biden that had extended Harris’ security detail beyond the standard six-month period required by federal law.

Harris’ initial Secret Service protection as former vice president legally ended on July 21, 2024, following the standard six-month period after leaving office.

However, Biden secretly signed an executive memorandum extending her protection for an additional year before departing the White House, an arrangement that remained undisclosed until Trump’s recent cancellation.

The cancellation becomes effective September 1, 2025, just weeks before Harris launches her high-profile book tour promoting “107 Days,” her memoir about her presidential campaign.

The timing places Harris in an elevated public spotlight without federal protection during a period when she’ll be traveling across multiple cities for promotional events.

Harris faced heightened security threats as the first Black woman to serve as vice president, with concerns escalating significantly during her presidential campaign. Security experts noted that threat levels remained elevated into January 2025, particularly given the contentious nature of the election and lingering public tensions.

The Secret Service detail provided far more than personal bodyguards, including 24/7 threat intelligence analysis and comprehensive digital security monitoring.

Harris will lose access to federal agents protecting her Los Angeles home, along with professional monitoring of emails, texts, and social media threats that could impact her safety.

Replacing federal protection with private security could cost Harris millions of dollars annually to maintain similar coverage levels. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, already lost his Secret Service detail on July 21 under standard provisions for former vice presidential spouses, leaving the family to navigate security arrangements independently.

Trump’s decision underscores the political tensions surrounding security protocols for former officials, especially given the two assassination attempts against Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign.

The cancellation raises questions about consistency in protecting high-profile political figures who continue facing potential threats.
