President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night met with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the State House in Abuja as tensions rise over a planned nationwide protest by organised labour.
The meeting comes amid growing discontent among workers over unresolved issues, including wage concerns, rising living costs and delays in implementing agreements previously reached with the Federal Government.
Confirming the engagement, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the discussions involved key government and labour stakeholders.
Those present included the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The labour delegation was led by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, alongside other national officers of the congress.
Organised labour has recently warned of mass protests across the country, accusing the Federal Government of failing to address workers’ welfare concerns and delaying relief measures promised to cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms.
As of the time of filing this report, no official details have been released on the outcome of the meeting or whether it will affect the planned protest.
