Super Eagles Set for Crucial World Cup Play-Off Against Gabon

 The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on the Panthers of Gabon on 13 November 2025 at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, Morocco, in a decisive CAF playoff for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup inter-confederation playoff.

The road to a World Cup qualification

Nigeria qualified for the playoff as one of the top runners-up in the African qualifiers, buoyed by a resounding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic last month — a match that featured a Victor Osimhen hat-trick and reignited the team’s campaign. Gabon also finished strongly, securing second place in Group F behind the Ivory Coast to book their place in the playoff round.

The winner of Thursday’s tie will advance to meet either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on 16 November, with the victor of that final progressing to the intercontinental playoff for a potential World Cup berth.

Mikel Obi comments on the upcoming match

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has warned Nigeria’s players against complacency, emphasizing the importance of treating the Gabon clash as a final. Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, the ex-Chelsea midfielder said the team must approach the match with total commitment and respect for their opponents.

“The first game is the most important — Gabon is the most important game,” Mikel said. “Don’t underestimate them, because if we do, we’re in trouble. Go into that match like it’s the last game you’ll ever play. Win that, and then we can think about Cameroon or someone else.”

Mikel also reminded the players of the weight of expectation that comes with representing Nigeria:

“Play with confidence, bravery, and passion. You’re wearing the green-white-green, representing 300 million people. That’s a lot of pressure, but you have to deal with it. I believe they can do it.”

Nigeria vs Gabon

Nigeria and Gabon share a rivalry that spans over six decades. Of their nine previous meetings, the Super Eagles have won five, drawn three, and lost once — a 2–1 upset in June 1989 that cost Nigeria a place at the Italia ’90 World Cup. The Super Eagles, however, head into this encounter unbeaten in their last four qualifiers and without defeat in their last four meetings with Gabon (three wins, one draw).

Gabon, coached by Thierry Mouyouma, have caught attention with their attacking style, scoring 22 goals in 10 qualifying matches. Yet, their record against Africa’s top teams remains concerning — four defeats and a draw against higher-ranked nations since Mouyouma took charge.

With the memory of missing the 2022 World Cup still fresh, Mikel cautioned that failure to qualify again would be a major setback for Nigerian football. He urged the team to remain focused, disciplined, and united as they aim to take the next step toward returning to the world stage.
