About the Job

Oando PLC is seeking an experienced Risk Advisor to join a dynamic team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in identifying, monitoring, and mitigating risks across our trading operations. Reporting to the GM, Risk & Strategy, you will ensure our trade activities align with the company’s vision and strategic roadmap. This is a fast-paced, collaborative role requiring keen attention to detail, analytical rigor, and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Identification and Assessment

  • Update and maintain the company’s risk management framework, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and regulatory standards.
  • Test and improve the efficiency of internal control frameworks.
  • Identify and assess risks (market, credit, operational) affecting the organization.
  • Monitor macroeconomic, geopolitical, and fiscal risks, developing actionable mitigation strategies in collaboration with cross-functional experts.

Price Risk Management / Deals Desk

  • Assess risk exposure related to product pricing, acquisition, storage, and arbitrage opportunities.
  • Conduct trade profit & loss reviews with traders and back-office staff.
  • Track and analyze trading positions and mark-to-market valuations.
  • Ensure accurate deal entries into commodity trade risk management systems for both derivatives and physical trades.

Monitoring and Adherence

  • Serve as system administrator for the trade risk management software, ensuring data integrity and compliance with internal procedures.
  • Oversee risk management activities in other regions.
  • Provide daily reports on risk control process deviations and advise traders and back-office functions on risk exposure management.
  • Conduct regular internal audits of processes and controls.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across departments to foster an open dialogue about risk-related matters.
  • Present complex risk concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences with clarity and empathy.
  • Participate in financial reconciliation meetings with NOCs and trading counterparties, ensuring effective communication on risk management.
  • Resolve conflicts related to risk decisions with professionalism and tact.

Scope of Responsibility & Accountability

  • Prepare reports and analyses of trades, update trade trackers, and maintain monitoring schedules.
  • Document policies and procedures for the trading division.
  • Manage physical and electronic filing systems related to risk management.
  • Monitor and report on market, operational, and credit risks in alignment with the company’s risk management policies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Analytical/Applied Sciences.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in a structured business environment, including 3 years focused on business process reviews, internal controls, risk management, and financial statement analysis.
  • Risk certifications (IRM, GARP, CMA, CERA, COSO ERM) are advantageous.
  • Experience with a Big 4 Audit firm is required.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of oil & gas markets and global commodity trading.
  • Expertise in derivatives trading (forwards, futures, swaps, OTCs).
  • Proficiency with trading platforms and market analysis tools (e.g., Bloomberg, Platts, Refinitiv/Reuters).
  • Knowledge of risk and internal control frameworks (e.g., COSO).
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and process-led thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication, networking, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to present complex information effectively and collaborate across teams.
  • Strong ethics, attention to detail, time management, and multitasking abilities.
  • High emotional intelligence and a passion for continuous learning.

  • Timely and accurate capture of trade data.
  • Prompt resolution of quality issues in trading operations.
  • Compliance with policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Timeliness and effectiveness of investigations and risk mitigation recommendations.
  • Minimal queries or issues from regulatory bodies and external audits.
