The Oyo State Government has announced a new Entertainment Tax Clearance policy, requiring individuals and organizations to obtain official clearance and pay specified fees before hosting certain social and ceremonial events across the state.
According to the notice issued by the Oyo State Entertainment Tax Clearance Office, the levy applies to popular gatherings such as burials, weddings, birthdays, naming ceremonies, chieftaincy events, corporate promotions, graduation ceremonies, club-organised events, wake-keeps, and engagements.
Tax Rates
The tax rates, as published by the state secretariat in Ibadan, range from ₦25,000 to ₦35,000, depending on the event category. Specifically, weddings, burials, chieftaincy ceremonies, and corporate promotions attract ₦35,000 each, while other ceremonies such as birthdays, engagements, and naming events are charged ₦25,000.

Officials explained that the policy aims to enhance revenue generation and ensure that entertainment-related activities within the state are properly regulated. The initiative, they said, will also help create a structured database of event organizers and boost compliance with state tax laws.
Event planners and residents seeking to host functions are required to process payments and obtain official clearance from the Entertainment Tax Secretariat at Agodi Road, Ibadan.
The state government maintains that the measure is part of its broader efforts to improve internal revenue and formalize the growing entertainment and event industry in Oyo State.
