Former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, is alive, well, and residing in the United States, his former Commissioner for Information, C. Don Adinuba, confirmed on Friday, dismissing viral online reports claiming the ex-governor had died in London.
The unfounded rumours, which spread rapidly across social media and some online platforms, alleged that Obiano passed away in a London hospital. One report even attributed the claim to unnamed political associates, fuelling widespread speculation.
But Adinuba described the story as “false, mischievous, and completely unfounded.”
According to him, he spoke directly with Obiano shortly before issuing the statement.
“Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He lives in the United States of America. I just spoke with him now,” Adinuba said, urging Nigerians to disregard what he called an orchestrated falsehood.
The former commissioner warned that such baseless claims could cause unnecessary panic and emotional distress to Obiano’s family, friends, and the people of Anambra State.
Conflicting Reports Sparked Panic Online
Earlier on Friday, several blogs and online news outlets — including a Sahara Reporters update — claimed that the former governor had allegedly passed away in a London hospital. Some platforms cited anonymous sources, while others admitted they had no independent confirmation.
Obiano’s long-time publicist, Tony Nezianya, also told DAILY POST that he had not received any information validating the rumours.
“I can’t confirm to you; I’m not aware of such news,” Nezianya said, adding that he had not been briefed by the former governor or his family.
The lack of credible confirmation created confusion, prompting many Anambra residents and political observers to seek clarity.
Who Is Willie Obiano?
Willie Obiano served as Governor of Anambra State from 2014 to 2022, succeeding Peter Obi, now the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Born on August 8, 1955, Obiano hails from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
Since leaving office, he has faced inquiries from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged mismanagement involving N4 billion, an investigation that remains ongoing.
