MTN Nigeria has appointed Bukola Ajayi as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO), elevating a technology leader whose career spans more than 27 years and whose professional journey mirrors the evolution of Nigeria’s digital economy itself.
The appointment places one of the company’s most experienced technology executives at the centre of MTN’s next phase of transformation as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, automation and digital platforms increasingly reshape the telecommunications industry.
For MTN Nigeria, the promotion represents more than a leadership change. It is the culmination of a decades-long journey by an executive who has helped build, modernise and strengthen many of the technology systems that support one of Africa’s largest telecommunications companies.

Building a Foundation: From Ibadan to International Business Schools
Ajayi’s educational journey reflects an unusual combination of technical training and executive business education.
She began her formal technology education at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, where she earned a Higher National Diploma in Computer Science with Upper Credit. During her student years, she was actively involved in Christian fellowship activities, serving as a librarian and leading a team of students who taught biblical studies and assisted lecturers’ children with academic work.
Recognising early that technology leadership requires business understanding as well as technical competence, she subsequently pursued management studies at the University of Calabar, earning both a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and a Master of Business Administration (MBA), graduating with Merit.
Her academic development continued internationally at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Information Systems. The programme strengthened her expertise in enterprise systems, information management and technology architecture at a time when digital transformation was becoming a strategic priority for global businesses.
Ajayi later deepened her management credentials through the prestigious Senior Management Programme (SMP) at Lagos Business School, one of Africa’s leading executive education institutions.
In 2016, she attended the Leading Strategic Initiatives Programme at IMD Business School in Switzerland, a programme designed for executives responsible for driving large-scale organisational transformation and strategic change.
Her executive education journey reached another milestone in 2022 when she completed the highly regarded General Management Programme (GMP) at Harvard Business School.
Reflecting on the experience, Ajayi described the four-month programme as transformational, citing more than 100 case studies and extensive exposure to leadership, strategy, finance, macroeconomics, negotiation, innovation, ethics and global business management. She noted that the programme’s lessons would influence her professional career for years to come.
The breadth of her educational background—from computer science and information systems to strategy, finance and executive leadership—helps explain her ability to bridge technology and business, a capability increasingly demanded of modern CIOs.
Rising Through the Ranks at MTN Nigeria
Ajayi’s career at MTN Nigeria has been defined by steady progression through increasingly strategic leadership positions.
She joined the company during its formative years and became deeply involved in building the technology platforms that would support MTN’s rapid expansion across Nigeria.
Over the years, she has led initiatives spanning enterprise architecture, application development, engineering transformation, digital platforms, IT governance, business systems, automation and operational resilience.
Before her appointment as CIO, she served as General Manager for Architecture and Enterprise IT, overseeing technology architecture and engineering strategy across critical business functions.
Her responsibilities included ensuring that technology systems remained scalable, resilient and capable of supporting millions of subscribers while enabling the introduction of new digital services.
That experience gave her a rare understanding of both the technical foundations and business priorities of the organisation she now helps lead.
Architect of MTN’s Digital Transformation
Throughout her tenure, Ajayi has played a central role in modernising MTN Nigeria’s technology infrastructure.
Her work has included the development of enterprise platforms, engineering transformation programmes, digital payment systems and technology frameworks designed to improve service delivery and operational efficiency.
She has been closely associated with efforts to accelerate software delivery through agile methodologies, improve enterprise architecture governance and strengthen the reliability of mission-critical systems.
As telecommunications companies increasingly evolve into technology and digital services businesses, these capabilities have become central to competitiveness.
The systems she helped design and strengthen now support a growing ecosystem that extends beyond traditional voice and data services into fintech, enterprise solutions, cloud services and digital platforms.
A Prominent Voice on Artificial Intelligence and Africa’s Digital Future
Beyond her operational responsibilities, Ajayi has emerged as one of the industry’s leading voices on digital transformation and emerging technologies.
She has spoken at major industry events on topics including artificial intelligence, 5G deployment, cloud computing, digital infrastructure and technology leadership.
A recurring theme in her public interventions is the need for Africa to develop indigenous technological capabilities rather than relying entirely on imported solutions.
She has argued that artificial intelligence must be built around local talent, local data and local innovation ecosystems if African countries are to capture its full economic value.
Her contributions to industry discussions have made her one of the most visible female technology executives in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Championing Talent Development and Inclusive Leadership
Ajayi is also recognised for her commitment to mentorship and leadership development.
Throughout her career she has advocated for stronger talent pipelines, particularly in technology and engineering disciplines.
She has consistently emphasised the importance of investing in people alongside infrastructure, arguing that sustainable digital transformation depends as much on human capability as technological capability.
Her leadership style reflects a belief that technology should ultimately serve people and improve their everyday experiences.
That philosophy has resonated within MTN’s broader efforts to build local digital skills and strengthen Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.
Taking Charge at a Defining Moment
Ajayi assumes the CIO role at a pivotal moment for both MTN Nigeria and the global telecommunications industry.
Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, automation, digital financial services and data governance are transforming the sector at unprecedented speed. Technology leadership has consequently become a core strategic function, directly influencing revenue growth, customer experience, operational efficiency and innovation.
For MTN Nigeria, the appointment signals confidence in a leader who combines deep institutional knowledge with world-class executive training and nearly three decades of technology experience. Having spent years helping build the systems that power the company, Bukola Ajayi now takes responsibility for shaping the next chapter of MTN Nigeria’s technological evolution.
Her journey—from a computer science student in Ibadan to a Harvard-trained executive leading technology strategy at Nigeria’s largest telecommunications company—offers a compelling example of how technical expertise, continuous learning and strategic leadership can converge to create transformational impact.
