Lagos Tax Authority Shuts Down Shoprite Lekki Over Alleged Tax Non-Compliance

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has sealed the Shoprite outlet located at The Palms Shopping Mall, Lekki, over alleged failure to meet tax obligations.

A notice placed at the entrance stated that the outlet had violated provisions of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 (as amended), attracting penalties that include fines and possible imprisonment.

According to the notice, “This premises has failed to comply with his/her tax obligations under the relevant tax laws. This is a contravention of the law punishable by both pecuniary penalties and imprisonment pursuant to Section 94 of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 as amended. By order of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS).”

The agency further warned that removing the notice without authorization constitutes “an offence punishable by imprisonment.” As of press time, LIRS had not clarified whether the sanction targeted Shoprite directly, the mall management, or individual tenants.

The enforcement underscores Lagos State’s ongoing drive to strengthen tax compliance among major retail operators.
