In a significant boost to youth welfare, Akwa Ibom State has approved a ₦20,000 monthly allowance for all its indigenes participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) across Nigeria. This development follows Governor Umo Eno’s recent decision to increase the monthly stipend for corps members serving within the state from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, effective August 1, 2025.
The extension was announced after the State Executive Council meeting held in Uyo and presided over by Governor Eno. According to the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, the initiative aims to cushion the economic burden and improve the well-being of young Akwa Ibomites in national service.
“The grant is subject to periodic review based on prevailing circumstances,” the council noted, signaling a commitment to sustained support. Over 10,000 corps members are deployed to Akwa Ibom annually, and the governor emphasized the importance of encouraging and supporting them in line with the federal government’s ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
Governor Eno’s policies underscore a broader commitment to youth empowerment and economic development amid rising inflation. The increased NYSC allowance for indigenes enhances Akwa Ibom’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most corps-friendly states, offering both financial relief and a sense of belonging to its youths in service.
