Ghanaian President John Mahama Suspends Country’s Chief Justice

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the country’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

The decision, which is in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Ghanaian Constitution and taken in consultation with the Council of State, was announced on Tuesday, April 22.  The specific allegations contained in the petitions have, however, not been publicly disclosed.

The president has constituted a five-member Committee to investigate the petitions against the Chief Justice, with members of the committee drawn from the civil service, the Military, Academia, and the judiciary.

Members of the committee include:

  • Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang – Supreme Court
  • Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu – Supreme Court
  • Daniel Yaw Domelevo – Former Auditor-General
  • Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo – Ghana Armed Forces
  • Professor James Sefah Dzisah – University of Ghana
