Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour urges FG to arm citizens

Former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has called on the Federal Government to explore licensing firearms for citizens if it cannot guarantee their safety.

Rhodes-Vivour made the statement on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’, monitored by DAILY POST, in the wake of rising abductions and escalating insecurity across the country.

Government Failures Fuel Public Fear

“This is not just about the North. We have seen abductions in Kwara and Ogun States over the weekend. Destruction of institutions and the loss of public trust make people lose hope in government,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

He warned that repeated government failures could drive citizens to take self-protection into their own hands, emphasizing that temporary measures by the authorities may not prevent people from seeking long-term security solutions.

Call for Firearm Licensing

“I’m talking about this situation now because of the failure of the government that we find ourselves in. In this failure, if the government cannot sit up, then they should start considering licensing firearms,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour described asking citizens to remain helpless in the face of insecurity as wickedness, underscoring the urgency for effective governmental action to restore public trust and safety.
