DisCos installed 228,614 meters in Q3 2025 – NERC

Despite the incremental progress, NERC noted that a significant metering gap remains.

NERC prepaid meter figure

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says electricity distribution companies (DisCos) installed a total of 228,614 meters in the third quarter of 2025, reflecting a modest improvement in metering deployment across the power sector.

The commission disclosed this in its third-quarter 2025 report published on its website in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the report, the figure represents a 0.73% increase compared with the 226,959 meters installed in the second quarter of 2025.

Meter Installation Breakdown

NERC said the bulk of the meters installed during the quarter were deployed under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework, which accounted for 176,302 meters, representing 77.12% of total installations.

Meters installed under the Vendor Financed framework stood at 44,104 units, representing 25.01%, while 7,902 meters, or 3.46%, were deployed under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DSRP).

The report further showed that 175 meters, representing 0.08%, were installed through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), while 131 meters, or 0.06%, were installed under the DisCo Financed framework.

Despite the incremental progress, NERC noted that a significant metering gap remains. As of the end of September 2025, only 6,661,564 customers out of 12,030,315 active registered customers in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) were metered.

To protect electricity consumers from potential overbilling arising from the lack of meters, the commission said it has continued to issue monthly energy caps for all feeders across the DisCos.

According to NERC, the energy caps set the maximum amount of electricity that can be billed to unmetered customers each month, based on the gross energy received by each DisCo and the consumption pattern of metered customers on the same feeders.
