China Pledges Technical Support to Help Nigeria Modernise Seaports

China has pledged technical support to Nigeria to modernize and automate its seaports. This highlights a growing partnership in the maritime sector, showcasing how China supports Nigeria port modernization efforts. The announcement was made by China’s Vice Minister of Transport, Li Yang. He spoke during a bilateral meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, on the sidelines of maritime engagements in London. This was according to a post by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

China to Provide Training, Technology and Diplomatic Support

China also committed to providing maritime education, technical training, and capacity-building opportunities for Nigerian youths. This aims to strengthen human capital in the sector. Li Yang further confirmed China’s backing for Nigeria in the upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council election scheduled for 28 November.

Areas of Cooperation Highlighted

Minister Oyetola identified key areas of collaboration, including:

  • Port digitalisation and automation
  • Maritime safety and security enhancement
  • Shipbuilding and repair partnerships
  • Inland waterways development
  • Seafarer training and certification
  • Blue economy investments
  • Maritime environmental protection

Both nations resolved to enhance technical cooperation and formalise the partnership through a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

$1 Billion Modernization for Nigeria’s Busiest Ports

The Federal Government recently approved $1 billion for upgrades at Apapa and TinCan Island ports. This is part of the initiative in which China supports Nigeria port modernization by expanding capacity, improving cargo handling, and introducing a paperless, technology-driven port system to reduce congestion, turnaround time, and corruption.

While critics, including Peter Obi, have raised concerns over Lagos-centric development, Minister Oyetola assured that similar modernization projects are planned for other Nigerian ports. These projects are part of a 10-year national marine and blue economy strategy.

China’s Expertise Expected to Boost Nigeria’s Maritime Competitiveness

China’s technical support is expected to help Nigeria bridge operational gaps. This support will increase efficiency and enhance competitiveness in regional and global maritime trade.
