Planemaker Boeing has reached settlements in three lawsuits filed by the families of victims killed in the March 2019 crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, their attorney announced on Wednesday.
The victims in the settled cases, Mercy Ngami Ndivo, Abdul Jalil Qaid Ghazi Hussein, and Nasrudin Mohammed, all had ties to Kenya. Their families were represented by Chicago attorney Robert Clifford, who has served as lead counsel for the majority of plaintiffs suing Boeing over the disaster.
Boeing 737 MAX Crash
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa in March 2019, killing all 157 people on board. The tragedy occurred five months after Lion Air Flight 610, also a Boeing 737 MAX, went down in the Java Sea, bringing the total death toll from the two crashes to 346 people. Investigations found that an automated flight control system contributed to both accidents.
Boeing has since settled more than 90% of the civil lawsuits related to the two crashes, paying out billions of dollars in compensation through lawsuits, a deferred prosecution agreement, and other settlements, according to company disclosures.
The twin disasters prompted a 20-month global grounding of the 737 MAX and ultimately cost Boeing more than $20 billion in losses and compensation.
