NPR Veteran Ari Shapiro Joins CNN, Launches New Podcast With Audie Cornish

The former NPR host expands into digital media as CNN deepens its push into podcasting and cross-platform storytelling.

Veteran broadcaster Ari Shapiro has joined CNN as a contributor, marking a notable shift in the evolving relationship between traditional media institutions and high-profile independent journalists.

As part of his new role, Shapiro will appear across CNN’s television and digital platforms while also co-hosting a new video podcast titled “Engagement Party” alongside Audie Cornish, a former colleague from NPR and current CNN anchor.

The podcast, set to debut on May 22, will explore the cultural trends, ideas, and digital conversations shaping public discourse.

It will be available on CNN’s streaming platforms as well as major podcast services, reflecting the network’s growing emphasis on multi-platform storytelling.

Shapiro’s move comes after a 25-year career at NPR, where he became widely recognized as a host of All Things Considered, one of the network’s flagship programs.

During his tenure, he also served as an international correspondent based in London and reported from the White House across multiple administrations, including those of Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Beyond radio journalism, Shapiro has expanded his presence across media formats.

He hosted the Netflix reality competition series The Mole and authored the memoir The Best Strangers in the World.

His work has earned him multiple accolades, including three Edward R. Murrow Awards.

His appointment underscores a broader industry trend in which legacy news organizations are increasingly partnering with established voices who maintain independent brands and audiences.

Rival networks have adopted similar strategies, collaborating with podcast creators and digital personalities to expand reach and relevance in a fragmented media landscape.

With “Engagement Party,” CNN aims to tap into the growing appetite for conversational, insight-driven content that bridges traditional journalism and modern digital culture—an approach Shapiro and Cornish are well-positioned to deliver given their shared history and experience.
