Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecommunications service providers, has reached a significant milestone by surpassing 650 million mobile customers worldwide. According to data from GSMA Intelligence, this makes Airtel the second-largest telecom operator globally in terms of mobile subscriber base, with extensive operations across India and Africa.

Indian Operations

In India, Airtel serves over 368 million mobile subscribers and continues to expand its technological footprint. The company was the first to launch 5G Plus services in the country, anchoring a converged ecosystem that includes Xstream AirFiber fixed wireless access (FWA) and an integrated IPTV service. Airtel now delivers high-speed internet to over 13 million homes and digital TV services to more than 15 million households.

Innovation at Airtel is driven by a customer-centric approach, including the deployment of the world’s first network-based AI spam protection system. These services are complemented by Airtel Business, which provides mission-critical solutions to enterprises.

Offerings include Airtel IQ, cybersecurity, SD-WAN, cloud, managed services, IoT, and secure connectivity. These solutions use an extensive network of over 400,000 route kilometers of subsea fiber and Nxtra’s green data centers to support India’s growing AI and digital workloads.

Further diversifying its services, Airtel has entered the non-banking financial sector (NBFC), leveraging its user data to offer personalized credit and financial products via the Airtel app.

Airtel Africa: Expanding Digital Access

Across Africa, Airtel serves over 179 million customers in 14 countries, providing mobile voice, high-speed data, and international roaming services. A central part of its regional strategy is Airtel Money, a mobile financial platform with more than 52 million users. Airtel Money enhances financial inclusion by providing banking and instant payment services to millions of previously unbanked individuals, reinforcing Airtel’s role as a vital digital lifeline across the continent.

Global Space & Connectivity Initiatives

Airtel is also extending connectivity beyond regional markets. Strategic partnerships with Eutelsat OneWeb and SpaceX allow Airtel to leverage Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband to remote maritime, aviation, and rural areas. These initiatives aim to bridge the global digital divide by bringing reliable connectivity to underserved regions.
