Airtel Money Posts $994 Million Revenue in FY2025, Accelerates IPO Plans to Challenge MTN MoMo Dominance

With 29.9% constant currency growth and $136 billion in transactions, Airtel Africa’s fintech unit gains ground on MTN’s larger MoMo platform and eyes 2026 listing

Airtel Africa’s mobile money unit, Airtel Money, delivered $994 million in revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2025—representing a 29.9% increase in constant currency. The platform also recorded a 17.3% rise in customer base to 44.6 million users, and processed over $136 billion in transaction value, solidifying its position as a leading fintech force across sub-Saharan Africa.

These results position Airtel Money as Africa’s second-largest mobile money platform, directly challenging the dominance of MTN’s MoMo, which reported $1.4 billion in revenue and 72.5 million users in 2024. While MTN leads in size, Airtel’s faster growth and sharper focus on app-driven user engagement and merchant services have helped it close the gap significantly.

Key highlights include a 91% surge in app-based transaction value, 51% growth in merchant and bill payments, and ongoing expansion of its agent network—now at 1.7 million agents across its 14 operating markets. Airtel’s strategic partnerships and product innovations—spanning microloans, savings, remittances, and insurance—are deepening user engagement and financial inclusion.

The company has confirmed that plans to publicly list Airtel Money remain on track, with an IPO targeted for H1 2026, subject to market conditions. Investors are watching closely, as the listing could unlock further value in what is already one of Africa’s fastest-growing fintech businesses.

“Airtel Money is unlocking opportunity and transforming lives by providing digital financial services at scale,” said CEO Sunil Taldar. “We are building a business that is not just growing fast but also shaping the future of digital finance in Africa.”

With mobile money now contributing over 20% of Airtel Africa’s total revenue, and fintech seen as a key growth engine across the continent, the battle for mobile money supremacy between Airtel and MTN is set to intensify—making Airtel Money’s upcoming IPO one of the most anticipated fintech events in emerging markets.
