OPay Shutdown September 2026? Company Debunks Viral Notice

OPay Digital Services has dismissed a social media message claiming the fintech will suspend operations from September, telling customers to disregard the publication and verify company announcements through its official channels.

OPay Digital Services has dismissed a viral notice claiming the fintech will suspend operations from September 1, 2026, telling customers that the publication is false and urging them to verify announcements through its official channels.

The claim has circulated on social media as September approaches, prompting questions among OPay users about whether the fintech plans to stop operating or take an extended break.

OPay, however, said there is no planned September shutdown.

“OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!” the company said in a statement shared through its verified communication channels.

The company described the circulating publication as false and encouraged customers to be cautious about information concerning its services that is not published through its authenticated platforms.

The fintech said the notice circulating online did not originate from the company and should be disregarded.

OPay also urged users to examine the viral publication carefully, pointing to inconsistencies that could help distinguish the fake notice from its legitimate communications.

“Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company said.

For customers who have encountered the message online, OPay’s position is that the publication should not be treated as an official announcement about the company’s operations.

The publication circulating online claimed that OPay was preparing to suspend its operations from September 1, 2026.

The claim presented the alleged break as an established decision by the fintech, potentially creating uncertainty among customers who use OPay for payments and other financial services.

OPay has rejected that claim and said customers should rely on its verified communication channels when seeking information about changes to its services or operations.

The company has not publicly identified the source of the fabricated publication.

OPay executive warns customers against acting on fake notice

Dr Maxwell Loko, OPay’s Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, separately rejected the publication and warned customers against making financial decisions based on it.

“This post is false, malicious and misleading. OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information,” Loko said.

Loko urged members of the public to disregard the message and obtain information about OPay’s services and operations only through its verified communication channels.

He also warned that deliberately distributing false information intended to cause panic or undermine confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.

“The deliberate spread of false information designed to cause panic or undermine confidence in a financial institution is a serious matter and may have legal consequences,” he said.

What should OPay customers do?

Customers who see claims about an alleged OPay shutdown should verify the information before taking action.

OPay has advised users to:

  • Check the company’s verified communication channels for announcements.
  • Avoid sharing unverified claims about OPay’s operations.
  • Do not make financial decisions based solely on the viral publication.
  • Check whether an announcement actually comes from OPay before treating it as official.
  • Be particularly cautious about messages that create urgency or encourage customers to withdraw funds.

The company’s warning is particularly relevant for financial-service users because false information about a fintech’s operations can potentially cause unnecessary panic and encourage customers to make decisions without verifying the underlying claim.

OPay’s public clarification says the company remains operational and has no planned September break.

The fintech’s online status page also reports its services as operational, while its official website continues to provide customers with access to service information, account-security guidance and customer-support channels.

The distinction is important: the viral publication presents an alleged future shutdown as fact, while OPay says that no such shutdown has been announced.

Why the OPay shutdown claim matters

OPay is a widely used digital financial-services platform in Nigeria, meaning claims about a potential suspension of its operations can quickly attract attention among customers.

The company has therefore urged users to treat social-media publications about its services with caution and confirm significant announcements through authenticated OPay platforms.

The incident also highlights the risks of relying on screenshots, forwarded messages or social-media publications as sources of information about financial institutions.

For customers, the safest approach is to verify major claims directly with the company before transferring funds, closing accounts, withdrawing money or taking any other financial action.

OPay says it is “going nowhere”

OPay’s response is clear: the fintech says it is not shutting down and is not going on a break from September 1, 2026.
