The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that 33 commercial banks have successfully met the revised minimum capital requirements under its recently concluded recapitalisation programme.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the apex bank disclosed that a total of ₦4.66 trillion was raised during the 24-month exercise, boosting capital adequacy ratios across the banking sector to levels above global Basel Committee on Banking Supervision benchmarks.
The development, according to the CBN, enhances banks’ resilience and strengthens their capacity to support economic growth while absorbing financial shocks.

Domestic Participation
The recapitalisation drive also witnessed robust participation from domestic investors, with approximately 73% of the total funds raised sourced locally.
This strong local contribution underscores growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s banking sector despite prevailing economic challenges.
The CBN noted that the recapitalisation process was executed seamlessly, with no disruption to banking operations throughout the period. However, it added that a small number of financial institutions are still undergoing regulatory and judicial review within existing supervisory frameworks.
The comes amid broader regulatory tightening, as the apex bank intensifies efforts to curb illicit financial flows and strengthen compliance standards.
Recent measures include stricter anti-money laundering rules aimed at improving transparency and accountability within the financial system.
