Lagos Embarks on Transformative Waste Management Initiative: Closing Dumpsites, Creating Jobs

Governor Sanwo-Olu Partners with ZoomLion Nigeria to Tackle Lagos’s Waste Crisis

In a landmark move towards environmental sustainability, Lagos State is set to revolutionize its waste management system.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled plans to shut down two of the state’s largest dumpsites, Olusosun in Ojota and Solous III in Igando.

This initiative stems from a new waste management agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, signed recently.

Under this agreement, a Transfer Loading Station will be constructed at the Olusosun dumpsite, facilitating its complete closure.

From there, 2,500 tonnes of waste will be transported daily to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu.

A similar strategy will be applied in Igando, where a recovery facility at the Solous III dumpsite will redirect 1,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new center in Badagry.

This bold reform addresses Lagos’s staggering daily waste generation of 13,000 tonnes, underscoring the critical need for advanced waste management solutions.

Beyond its environmental impact, the project is expected to create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, boosting economic growth in the region.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Lagos’s environmental agenda, stating, “This project will improve how we handle waste and is expected to create over 5,000 jobs directly and indirectly.”

He further stressed the urgency of the situation, noting, “Lagos produces around 13,000 tonnes of waste every single day, that’s a huge number, and it’s clear we need stronger systems in place to deal with it.”

The partnership with ZoomLion Nigeria reflects Lagos’s determination to meet global standards in urban hygiene and environmental stewardship.

“We are taking steps in the right direction, towards cleaner streets, better health, and a more livable Lagos for all of us,” Sanwo-Olu affirmed.

This waste management reform is a testament to Lagos’s commitment to transforming into a modern, sustainable mega-city.
