Ongoing US Government Shutdown
The U.S. federal government entered shutdown at 12:01 a.m. EDT on October 1, 2025. This occurred after Congress failed to pass a continuing resolution or full appropriations legislation to fund government operations into the new fiscal year.
As a result, hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been furloughed. Additionally, many more are required to work without pay. Critical national functions such as the military and social security payments continue. However, many non-essential discretionary operations like some research programmes, administrative services, and national park facilities have been suspended or curtailed.
The shutdown has already had significant consequences: air travel disruptions tied to staffing shortages at federal agencies. This has caused delays in government services and mounting economic costs estimated at billions of dollars per week.
Meanwhile, political negotiations remain at an impasse. Republicans and Democrats constantly blame the other party for the deadlock, with no clear timeline for resolution.
