US Declares Wole Soyinka Ineligible for Entry After Visa Revocation

US Bans Wole Soyinka's Visa

The Nobel Prize-winning author, Professor Wole Soyinka, has announced that the United States government has revoked his visa, preventing him from travelling to the country.

Soyinka revealed the development during a media briefing at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos Island. Soyinka explained that it came as a surprise to him and insisted he had done nothing to justify such an action.

He informs visitors and organizers expecting him in the United States to put their plans on hold since he cannot enter the country at the moment. He added that anyone wishing to meet with him must do so in Nigeria because he currently has no valid US visa.

The notification of the visa withdrawal was issued by the US Consulate in Lagos through a letter dated October 23, 2025. The document, sent by the Non-Immigrant Visa Section, cited US Department of State regulations as the basis for the decision.

Soyinka stated that he has begun examining his past travels and records to determine what might have led to the action. He expressed confusion, insisting that he has no criminal record or legal issues that could justify the revocation.

The development comes at a time when the US government is implementing stricter immigration measures aimed at curbing migrant inflow.

In September, reports surfaced that Soyinka declined a request by the US Consulate for a visa re-interview. At the time, he said he initially believed the invitation was fraudulent because he had never received such a request in his long history of international travel.

He later confirmed the letter to be genuine but maintained that his relationship with US diplomatic officials has always been respectful and professional.

Soyinka’s revoked visa was a B1/B2 class, which permits temporary visits for business and tourism. The Nobel Laureate says he is now awaiting further clarification from US authorities as he continues to review his records to understand the reasons behind the ban.
