The discharged ministers are: Barr. Uju-Ken Ohanenye – Minister of Women affairs, Lola Ade – John – Minister of Tourism, Prof. Tahir Mamman (SAN) – Minister of Education, Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo – Minister of state, Housing and Urban Development, and Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim – Minister of Youth Development.
The discharge of the ministers could be attributed to a variety of factors.
The discharge of Uju – Ken Ohanenye, former minister of Women Affairs from office might not be unconnected with a string of corruption allegations that have rocked the ministry of women affairs in recent times.
in July 2024, the Federal House of Representatives launched a probe into allegations of the diversion of the sum of N1.5billion meant for the payment of contractors carrying out projects for the ministry.
Kafilat Ogbara, chairwoman of House Committee on Women Affairs stated that the ministry initiated new contracts not captured in the 2023 budget in 15 states and diverted N1.5 billion of funds for old contractors.
it was also alleged that the ministry purchased seven tricycles for a military Barrack in Abuja. She stated that the ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the American University of Nigeria, Yola, to pay Chibok girls’ school fees for seven years, all which were not fulfilled.
in september 2024, a group, identified as Concerned Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) dragged Ohanenye and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to an Enugu High Court, seeking an order of the court compelling the minister to account for the whooping N2billion it alleges the minister had siphoned from the ministry of women affairs as well as the $100M intervention funds granted to the ministry by the World Bank in aid of distressed Nigerian women.
some of the bogus projects the group alleged were awarded by the minister included: Purchase of seven tricycles for women from whom the minister allegedly demanded daily payments, Purchase of Iron dubbed Steaming Machines and scissors dubbed cutting machines at exorbitant rates of N680,000 per iron and N160,000 naira per scissors, as well as other forms of extortionate behavior overtime.
The IT expert, banker and erstwhile minister of tourism was also among the ministers to lose their place on the president’s cabinet.
At this point, her dismissal can be attributed to the merger of the ministry of Tourism and the ministry of Arts and Culture to form the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative economy under the guidance of the current minister of Arts, Culture and creative economy led by Hanatu Musawa even though it might not be unconnected with her health situation.
It is left to be seen if she would eventually be reassigned to a new role under the president.
Prof. Tahir Mamman’s administration as the minister of education has been controversial at best as the minister failed to end the age long ASUU strike before causing more public outcry with plans to enforce a policy barring students below 18 years from taking the WAEC and NECO examinations, a policy most Nigerians saw as backwards.
The outcry was justified as pupils aged 15-16 in the final lap of senior secondary school would have had to fritter away close to two to three years before they are allowed to sit the SSCE, which will usher them into universities.
It is therefore unsurprising that the president has decided to come down hard upon him with his hammer.
The erstwhile minister of state for Housing and Urban Development has had an almost invincible stint as a minister with his impact not really felt by Nigerians.
It is therefore not surprising he has been replaced by Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, former speaker of the Kano state house of Assembly.
The erstwhile minister for Youth Development has been relieved of her duties as part of the results of the performance review carried out by the president.
She is replaced by Ayodele Olawande, who was formerly Minister of state for youth development.
Moving forward, it is expected that the president would announce replacements for the removed ministers in cases where it has not already been done.
