Tinubu Appoints Engr. Abdullahi Garba as Acting NERC Chairman

Tinubu names 39-year-old strategic management expert Abdullahi Ramat to lead electricity regulatory commission, pending Senate confirmation

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Engr. Abdullahi Garba Ramat to serve as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), replacing outgoing chairman Sanusi Garba.

The appointment was confirmed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

To avoid a leadership vacuum in Nigeria’s power sector regulation, Tinubu directed Ramat to assume office in an acting capacity while awaiting Senate screening, in accordance with the law.

At 39, Engr. Ramat is both an electrical engineer and seasoned administrator, with a PhD in Strategic Management, signaling a shift toward youthful, reform-minded leadership.

His diverse academic background and engineering expertise position him to steer critical reforms in the Nigerian electricity market.

Ramat’s appointment aligns with Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to restructure the power sector and enhance electricity access, reliability, and affordability for Nigerians.

His experience is expected to drive consumer-focused regulation and improved energy service delivery.

Additional Appointments at NERC

President Tinubu also nominated Abubakar Yusuf as Commissioner for Consumer Affairs and Fouad Olayinka Animashun as Commissioner for Finance and Management Services.

These appointments reflect a broader reconstitution of NERC’s leadership aimed at strengthening the commission’s capacity to oversee Nigeria’s evolving electricity landscape.

Tinubu urged the appointees to leverage their professional expertise in advancing his administration’s power sector transformation agenda.
