Super Eagles Miss Out on 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification

The super Eagles of Nigeria fell to Dr. Congo on penalty shootout on Sunday in the final round of African qualifiers for the 2026 world cup.

Dr. Congo triumphed on penalties after a game in which they outclassed Nigeria stayed at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

Nigeria took an early lead through Frank onyeka in the first half, Dr. Congo however got an equalizer in the 32nd minute and were the better team from then onwards.

Super Eagles talisman Victor Osimhen was substituted at halftime through an injury and as a result, Nigeria’s attack became blunt. Tolu Arokodare had a game to forget whilst Akor Adams and Moses Simon could do nothing to impact the Eagles attack.

Stanley Nwabali’s two penalty saves in the shootout we’re not enough to rescue Nigeria as DR Congo went on to win the penalties 4-2.

Congo would now advance to the intercontinental playoffs taking place in March for a chance to secure a place at the mundial.
