Ndidi’s Father Dies in Delta State Road Crash; Besiktas and Fans Express Condolences

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is mourning the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who tragically passed away in a road accident on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in Umunede, Delta State, where the retired military officer was involved in a traffic crash. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Agbor, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ndidi’s club, Besiktas JK, confirmed the incident in an official statement on their X account:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”

The loss comes months after Ndidi captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he also scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles.

During celebrations of his headed goal against Tunisia, Ndidi dedicated the moment to his late father, acknowledging the influence of former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo on his upbringing:

“The celebration came from my dad because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo. So I just thought about my dad. I had seen the video before, but it came to my head, and I said I was going to do it for my dad,” Ndidi said.

The football world, fans, and media have flooded social media with condolences, highlighting Ndidi’s contribution to Nigerian football and the personal loss he now endures.
