State of The Nation: Angry Nigerian Youths Take Protests to National Assembly

Youths Protest in National Assembly

Angry Nigerian Youths have taken their protests to the National Assembly, seeking entry into the complex. They are protesting the present administration’s alleged misrule and failures to address key issues affecting Nigerians.

Some of the issues raised by the protesters included the alleged abuse of power by top-ranking officials in the current administration, as well as the widespread economic challenges and standard of living crisis facing the country.

The protesters who were intercepted at the National Assembly gates by armed personnel also expressed displeasure at the treatment being meted out to Senator Natasha Akpoti – Uduaghan representing Kogi Central senatorial district, who has been suspended for the last six months despite a court order to reinstate her.

Lawmakers earlier today extended their recess for an additional two weeks to October 7 instead of resuming on September 23rd as planned. Since reconvening for the 2025 legislative year on 4 February, the National Assembly has gone on break at least twice. On 27 March, members proceeded on Easter and Eid-el-Fitr holiday but failed to resume on 29 April as planned, instead adding another week and reconvening on 6 May.

These frequent extensions have further fueled the notion that the current Assembly might not be alive to their duties in the midst of a myriad of issues bedevilling the country.
